Discuss the limitations of the epidemiologic approach in understanding notions of causation. [40 marks]

In a paper by Rothman (1981/2007), he describes the discipline of epidemiology as follows: “A scientific discipline that developed slowly and flourished briefly for several decades is now nearly gone, leaving behind some knowledge of disease prevention, a few controversial alarms, and a collection of techniques for assessing the health consequences of people’s actions.” (Rothman, KJ. The rise and fall of epidemiology, 1950-2000 A.D. International Journal of Epidemiology 2007; 36(4): 708-710.)

Do you agree with the above assertion? What, if anything, does the discipline of epidemiology have to offer global society in the 21st century in understanding the causes of disease? [20 marks]
