In the state of Tennessee, to be a certified police officer, it is required to complete a police academy that meets the requirements of the Peace Officer Standers and Training Commission (POST). The Tennessee Department of Corrections has a six-week training program for all new probation employees to attend. These programs often hire instructors who have backgrounds in not only their profession; but some form of college education. The fact that people with higher education instruct the mandatory training shows that higher education is essential in this line of work.

A college education is essential when working in either law enforcement or probation and parole. In both fields, you deal with individuals from all types of backgrounds and cultures. Because of this, officers in both fields must be able to effectively communicate with individuals they come into contact with. Some studies have found that police officers who have higher education receive fewer citizens’ complaints than someone with only a high school diploma. Minton, K. W. (2011).
It has been argued that higher education brings benefits to an officer’s ability to work in an unpredictable world. Dominey, J. (2010). The reason why officers with degrees can communicate differently is due to the curriculum. Most criminal justice programs have courses that touch base on topics involving community policing, ethics, and mental health. Based on previous experience in these classes, I know that all teach how to communicate effectively with different types of individuals. Individuals with mental illness are a large percentage of the people in the criminal justice system. Utter-Godfrey, G. (2016)
Another benefit of having higher education is writing skills. Report writing is one of the most critical parts of any officer’s job, whether you’re a street cop, an investigator, or a probation officer. Reports are what follows a case up until the very end. An organized report allows an officer to aid the prosecutor in the development of his strategy. Bramble, L. (1982).
If an officer attempts to obtain a search warrant and has poor grammar structure, a judge will most likely not sign it. Officers with higher education often practice their writing skills and have taken courses in advanced writing. An officer without higher education typically has only taken a high school course in writing and received minimal training in an academy.
